Great War Glossary – F is for Funk

man-in-the-mudToday being Remembrance Day, it’s a fitting time to update my Glossary. Today’s entry: F is for funk.

A ‘funk’ was an offshoot of a main trench, where soldiers could go for some privacy when not on duty. Ever been ‘in a funk’ where you didn’t want to deal with anyone?

I found this picture online several years ago. I’ve used it before. It just makes me want to lift this poor lad out of the  mud and destruction and return him to his family. I wonder if he survived. If he did, I hope the rest of his life made up for what he endured.
